Favorite Free Latin Resources

Latin’s certainly on my mind a lot lately as we get much more serious about Latin studies in our home. The more we study Latin, the more I love it – and the more value I find in studying this “dead language.” To tell the truth, Latin is much more alive than I’ve given it credit for. In fact, Latin is increasing my vocabulary by leaps and bounds. And from my introductory studies, it’s certainly causing me to use a bit more brain power. It’s tough, but tough is good!
Here I simply wanted to share our family’s favorite free Latin resources – resources I’ve found or (in some cases) made. If you have any others you’d like to share, please feel free to leave a comment!

- Latin Declension Practice Worksheets from Family Style Schooling
- Suzanne Shares offers free noun declension charts with pronunciation keys: 1st Declension Packet, 2nd Declension Packet, 3rd Declension Packet, 4th Declension Packet, and 5th Declension Packet.
- To practice Latin noun endings, you can go to this interactive site: the Interactive Latin Library site. Click on “new word,” the declension you want to practice, and then type the answers for the noun that comes up on the screen.

- Why study Latin? Here are some great reasons… From my own experience – even with just the small amount of Latin I have learned – my understanding of the English language and its vocabulary has expanded quite a bit.
- Ellen J McHenry offers some downloadable Latin games that can be used as you learn introductory Latin.
- Here’s a downloadable Latin Roots Connect Four Gamefrom Collaborative Learning.
- Providing over 180 free textbook pdf downloads, Textkit is a free resource for learning Greek and Latin. Istillhaven’t been able to wade through it all to find the best for elementary or introductory students, but it contains a forum where we can get a better idea of what’s best-suited for elementary students. A few books available are Latin for Beginners, along with Latin for Beginners Key, and Beginner’s Latin Book.
- For practice, Anki is a downloadable software that can be used to practice flash cards. Quizlet is another great on-line flashcard maker.
- A Latin vocabulary file folder review game
Freebies from Curriculum Companies
- Classical Academic Press provides many Latin worksheets, charts, audios, and flashcards for free, including colorful charts on noun declensions and verb conjugations, Latin Interactive Cut-and Paste Worksheets for declensions and conjugations, and resources for their curriculum listed under the “support” tab for each product: Song School Latin (for primary grades), Latin For Children(for intermediate grades), and Latin Alive!(for middle and high school). Each program has downloadable samples – quite attractive.
- Compass Classroom is a company founded by two homeschooling dads. Check out their free downloads section, which offers free worksheets, on-line flashcards, vocabulary reference sheet, an on-line translator, and even a link to the Latin New Testament. You can also view the first four lessons of Visual Latinfor free.
- Lively Latinoffers a Free Introductory Mini-Course on the Latin Language (requires registration). Lively Latin is also the source of the Why study Latin? video above.
- Other programs include: Latin’s Not So Tough (Sample Pages), Prima Latina, Latina Christiana, First+ Form Latin, and Henle Latin from Memoria Press, and Latin Trivium (See sample pages.)
